Allegory:

- A work of written, oral or artistic expression that uses symbolic fictional figures and actions to convey truths or generalisations about human conduct or experience

- Allegory both conceals and reveals

- Like metaphor, an allegory expresses spiritual, psychological or abstract intellectual concepts in terms of material and concrete objects.

Realism... in fiction!

 Primarily a revolt against sentimentality and melodrama of romantic idealism

 Characters are less extraordinary

 Settings are more familiar

 Styles are plainer

 Plots have fewer twists

 More believable

 Often dreary matters

 Two factors:
1. Science development
2. Increasing understanding of social and political problems

 First important in 1700’s – 1800’s

( Example - Used by F. Scott Fitzgerald)

Biblical Myth and Mythology

Within different religions myths tend to differ. The idea and function of a myth is to provide justifications for a ritual. At the beginning of the 20th century many scholars thought of myths as their earliest forms off accounts of social customs and values.
